Retardation and repair of fatigue cracks in a microcapsule toughened epoxy composite – Part I: Manual infiltration
نویسنده
چکیده
As a first step towards a new crack healing methodology for cyclic loading, this paper examines two promising crack-tip shielding mechanisms during fatigue of a microcapsule toughened epoxy. Artificial crack closure is achieved by injecting precatalyzed monomer into the crack plane to form a polymer wedge at the crack tip. The effect of wedge geometry is also considered, as dictated by crack loading conditions during infiltration. Crack-tip shielding by a polymer wedge formed with the crack held open under the maximum cyclic loading condition (Kmax) yields temporary crack arrest and extends the fatigue life by more than 20 times. Hydrodynamic pressure and viscous damping as a mechanism of crack-tip shielding are also investigated by injecting mineral oil into the crack plane. Viscous fluid flow leads to retardation of crack growth independent of initial loading conditions. The success of these mechanisms for retarding fatigue crack growth demonstrates the potential for in situ self-healing of fatigue damage. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Retardation and repair of fatigue cracks in a microcapsule toughened epoxy composite—Part II: In situ self-healing
Successful arrest and retardation of fatigue cracks is achieved with an in situ self-healing epoxy matrix composite that incorporates microencapsulated dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) healing agent and Grubbs first generation Ru catalyst. Healing agent is released into the crack plane by the propagating crack, where it polymerizes to form a polymer wedge, generating a crack tip shielding mechanism. Du...

The addition of liquid-filled urea-formaldehyde (UF) microcapsules to an epoxy matrix leads to significant reduction in fatigue crack growth rate and corresponding increase in fatigue life. Mode-I fatigue crack propagation is measured using a tapered doublecantilever beam (TDCB) specimen for a range of microcapsule concentrations and sizes: 0, 5, 10, and 20% by weight and 50, 180, and 460 lm di...

متن کاملFracture and Fatigue Crack Propagation in Graded Composites
The propagation of cracks in graded materials under monotonic and cyclic loading was investigated via experiment and simulation. Graded alumina/epoxy composite specimens exhibiting a variation in composition from 5% to 65% epoxy, representing a twenty-fold variation in Young’s modulus, across a region of width between 6 and 20 mm, were produced by a multistep infiltration technique. Crack initi...

The purpose of this study is to investigate bending moment and the axial load capacity of a pressurized pipe suffering from a through-wall circumferential crack repaired by a composite sleeve. The three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) was adopted to compute the results, and the failure assessment diagram (FAD) was employed to investigate the failure behavior of the repaired pipe. The fi...
